The Child Victim Witness Program provides court preparation and emotional support to children and youth who are victims or witnesses of crime and are required to testify in criminal court proceedings. The program ensures that young people and their families understand the court process and feel supported, safe, and empowered throughout their involvement in the justice system.
Individualized court preparation sessions
Accompaniment and support on court days
Emotional support throughout the court process
System navigation and supportive referrals
Coordination with Crown Attorneys and court officials
Age-appropriate education about the justice system
Support for caregivers and family members
Assistance with Victim Impact Statements and testimonial accommodations
Children and youth under the age of 18 who are:
Victims of crime
Witnesses in criminal court proceedings
Their non-offending caregivers or guardians
VWAP (Primary referral source in joint service delivery model)
Direct referral from the Crown Attorney’s Office
Police referrals in consultation with Crown
Family and community-based referrals (where appropriate)
Reduce anxiety and increase understanding of the court process
Empower children and youth to give their best evidence
Promote trauma-informed, child-centred practices in justice settings
Support positive outcomes for youth testifying in criminal court
Improve collaboration between justice partners and victim services
